Each year, the American Psychoanalytic Association awards a cash prize for the best *Undergraduate Essay*, and this year’s deadline for submissions is September 30. Here are some details from APsA’s Web site: “Undergraduate, psychoanalytic work deserves recognition too! The Committee on Psychoanalysis and the Academy wants to reward the paper that was crafted under an instructor’s supervision or during an undergraduate course taken in the United States within one year of submission. For Junior and Senior Undergraduates in ALL Majors and Minors, as well as Graduate Students in ALL fields!
Applications now being accepted for externships to attend the American Psychoanalytic Association’s 2026 Annual Meeting, from January 27 to February 1, 2026, at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco CA.
10 students will be selected for this unique opportunity to discover the world of psychoanalysis in all its aspects: as a theory of mind, a method of interpretation, and a clinical practice. The winning students may attend all parts of the conference’s scientific program, such as plenary presentations, featured panels, and discussion groups and workshops on topics including gender and sexuality, addiction, child and adolescent analysis, ethics, psychoanalysis in the social sciences and humanities, research and empirical studies, and more. Each student will also be assigned a mentor to assist with registration and to be their guides during the conference and at Extern-Mentor social events. Each student’s registration fee and accommodation are covered by the externship. In addition, each student will receive a fixed stipend for transportation and meals.
Application requirements: You must be either a Junior or Senior undergraduate during the current academic year (2025-2026) or a Graduate Student, and your application must include the following:
1. your current v./résumé
2. a copy of your unofficial transcript
3. one academic letter of recommendation (which may be sent separately by the recommender or included, as a pdf document, with the student’s application materials)
4. a two-page essay (maximum 750 words) addressing the question: “How do you imagine psychoanalysis might impact your field of study?”

The International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations (ISPSO) is the premier organization that brings together scholars and practitioners who study and work with organizations from a psychoanalytic perspective. Its roots are in the Tavistock Clinic’s landmark work on the relationships between work, anxiety, and social defense, in the AK Rice Group Relations workshops, and in leadership studies pioneered by Abraham Zaleznik and Harry Levinson.
